Yesterday, Ana Calin and I had a conversation about how to turn your Substack into a book (and a business)
This conversation was about one core idea:
A book is not just something you publish.
It’s something you build from.
Here are some key takeaways from the session 👇
Why so many people want to write a book (and why most never do)
81% of people say there’s a book inside them, yet very few actually write one.
Not because they lack ideas, but because they lack clarity, structure, and focus
Writing long-form posts is easy.
Writing a coherent book is a different skill.
What changes when you publish a book
People see you differently; you’re perceived as an authority.
A book opens several opportunities including monetization
A fun fact:
The word authority comes from the word author.
You don’t need to be the smartest person in the room.
You need to be the one who went deep and published.
Why a book beats 400 posts
You can:
Write hundreds of articles
Share endlessly on Substack
Be knowledgeable and consistent
And still feel invisible.
A book compresses your thinking.
It signals seriousness.
It’s a tangible thing.
It positions you instantly.
How to turn your Substack into a book (in a simple way)
If you’ve been writing long-form already, you’re not starting from zero.
The process looks like this:
Choose a clear theme
Not everything you’ve written—the right thread.Collect related posts & material
You already have more than you think.Identify your audience
Who is this book actually for?Clarify the problem you help solve
The book is the answer.Anchor everything in stories
Your story. Client stories. Reader stories.
Even nonfiction needs narrative.
No stories = no book.
People forget facts, figures and advice, but they remember the stories.
The biggest mistake new authors make
Getting in and… out of their book.
Perfecting instead of finishing
Losing momentum
Not writing it in a single burst of energy.
That’s why the focus here is:
Write the first draft fast, in one focused window.
I wrote my first book in seven days, and it’s my most successful book.
Self-publishing: what actually matters
Self-publishing sounds easy.
But there are real decisions involved:
Categories
keywords
Kindle Unlimited vs wide distribution
Pricing
Formatting
Launch strategy
The key insight:
Write the book first. Everything else is secondary.
Pricing reality check (Amazon)
Amazon heavily nudges ebook pricing:
To earn 70% royalties, ebooks must be priced between $2.99–$9.99
Most nonfiction authority books sit comfortably around $7.99
Books aren’t priced for riches.
They’re priced for reach and positioning.
The real money is not in royalties
The most important shift discussed:
A book is not the product.
It’s the engine.
A strategic book can lead to:
Cohorts
Workshops
Coaching
Speaking
Consulting
Royalties become a bonus.
Authority becomes the asset.
Why Substack writers are perfectly positioned
If you’re already writing on Substack:
You already have an audience
You already have feedback
You can take readers along the journey
You don’t need ads to start
Even traditional publishers now tell authors:
“Build an audience first.”
You’re already doing the hard part.
Final reminder from the session
Start with what you already have.
Stop waiting for the perfect moment.
Don’t write a book.
Write the right book.
A short, clear, strategic book can change everything.
If you want to turn the work you have already done on Substack into a clear, strategic book that builds authority and opens up new opportunities, there are a few seats left in my March cohort.
You can message me directly with questions, or join here if you already know this is the right next step.
As always, thanks for reading.
